Project #1

Project #1

Coordination of Institutionally Funded Safety Research

Type of Project

Coordination Project

What is Project #1 about?

Today, the safety research conducted by the European Aeronautical Research Establishments is in general not coordinated among the establishments. P1 “Coordination of institutional funded safety research” connects and drives Safety R&TD in the European aeronautical research establishments to safety priorities established e.g. by the EC in the ACARE SRIA on Safety and Security. This Coordination Project for the first time brings the safety research of the European Research Establishments under a real coordination to maximize efficiency, to develop critical mass, and to ensure excellent alignment with the relevant safety agendas in Europe.

P1 will deliver an annual Aviation Safety Research Plan for the participating Research Establishments that will also be shared with the main European stakeholders. The coordination of institutionally funded safety research will be driven by this Aviation Safety Research Plan and will complement the five technical projects P3-P7, thus providing a strong leverage effect of the EC funded part of the Future Sky Safety Programme.

Coordination of institutionally funded safety research

P1 “Coordination of Institutionally Funded Safety Research” is divided in 3 Work Packages.

WP1.1 – Definition and update of the EREA Aviation Safety Research Plan

The main objective of WP1.1 is to establish and annually update an Aviation Safety Research Plan. This provides the basis for further coordination of nationally funded work at level agreed by participating establishments in order to match roadmaps issued by the European Commission, ACARE, EREA, European safety organizations and other key players.

WP1.2 – Implementation & monitoring of EREA Aviation Safety Research Plan

This WP implements the EREA Aviation Research Safety Plan as well as monitoring and reporting this implementation throughout the duration of P1. The implementation will happen through the organisation of technical events to exchange about institutional research programmes among the participating Research Establishments, the initiation of collaboration agreements between cooperating Research Establishments and the development of a communication platform to share publication and project information between Research Establishments.

WP1.3 – Leverage effect assessment of EREA Safety Research Coordination

This WP aims at gathering pan-European critical mass in order to overcome gaps, duplication and fragmentation. This will be made by enhancing coherence and efficiency of aviation safety research in Europe that underpins the development of future safety regulation, operations and technology. The objective of this WP is to develop a methodology for assessing the leverage effect and its application to FSS to assess the effect of coordination activities.

The overall project objective is to bring for the first time the safety research of the European Research Establishments under coordination to maximize efficiency, to develop critical mass, and to ensure excellent alignment with the relevant safety agendas in Europe.

P1 is expected to produce/develop a communication platform to share publication and information between Research Establishments.
